When well intentioned (maybe) three strikes laws were enacted we saw the unintended consequence described in the cobra effect where two strike criminals had increased incentive to resist, fight. kill cops. I’m old enough to remember when it was a given that cop killers never made it to the courtroom. They regressed from that and cop killers are making it to trial these days so this may be a new version of if you kill a cop you die. What will the unintended consequence be beyond increased ill will toward law enforcement? Hard to say.

The transition of the peace officer to law enforcement officer model is made worse by all of the laws that keep getting added to the books that no police officer with a conscience would enforce since any encounter with the police can end up deadly. I once asked a friend who is a policeman about enforcing bad laws. He responded the the officer can exercise discretion. But of course now we have an increasing number of zero tolerance policies where the police are called. More cobra effect.

Retired and living my golden years in a world full of angry people.
