Perhaps the answer is in your first statement "My experience is that most education is not education at all; instead, it is indoctrination."
The people who view intellectuals as the indoctrinated, walking in lock-step with their leftist professors may not be anti-intellectual in the way that you are thinking. It is hardly surprising that there is a lack of respect for "intellectuals" if they are viewed as being the opposite of how they view themselves.
Quoting the fictional character Tyrion Lannister, "When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar; you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say."
The indoctrinated product of intellectual professors are busy silencing those who do not adhere to their indoctrination. It's hard to give that respect as something resembling the result of real intellectual simulation. You hit a home run with the exception of the asymmetry of your assignment damnation.
