It's a Southern thing. I lived in Georgia for ten years as a young man and picked up the custom and never dropped it.

Now I live in Arizona and on my morning walks I greet people unless they are looking downor walking with their eyes closed as they pass (yes, some people do that) to signal that they do not wish to acknowledge a stranger. Most people return the greeting.

Retired and living my golden years in a world full of angry people.
