It may be a matter of people being both less naive and more cynical than in the past that trust is down.
Political and/or moneyed agenda is perceived to drive selection and rejection of studies and/or how it is reported. It is probably beyond mere perception but since we are discussing trust, perception, even if incorrect is enough to cause a lack of trust in what we are being told about the science.
I'm seventy years old so I've witnessed quite a few things that were presented as scientific truth that turned out to be false. Sometime just wrong and sometimes fraudulent for political agenda.
