I’m philosophically opposed to the draft because it is forced servitude, but then the Supremes sing the song of the oligarchs and the Constitution be damned.
There was an anti-war movement during the war in Vietnam because the of the draft. Since young men were fit for military service in those days all but the fortunate sons could be affected. The fortunate sons will still be unaffected now and now a huge part of the theoretical draft pool is unfit for the military today. The last part of that does not bode well for our nation.
Our wars today don’t have high enough body counts to warrant a large enough draft to frighten the public. During the war in Vietnam even the all volunteer Marine Corps had to draft after the heavy losses of 1968. I don’t see it getting to that point today unless we go to war with a near peer capable of inflicting heavy loss on us. It takes longer to train people for out modern high tech military today than it took to field the relatively low tech military in the sixties so we’ll be screwed if that comes to pass.
Sadly, the primary lesson that the warmongers learned from Vietnam was how to keep the public from getting worked up on a large scale.
